Yes, we’ve been hoping to have the big-name “regulars” like Guinness for stouts, Newcastle for browns, Killians for reds, Spaten for Oktoberfests…. but it doesn’t always work out that way. As hosts, I guess, we’ll probably have to make sure it happens more (I try to encourage it when I can, but I also get caught up in trying to get ones I’ve never had before).

I think if we can get people to reply-all with what they’re bringing ahead of time and get that conversation going sooner we would have less repeats and more variety too… but for the most part I feel like we’ve been doing pretty well!

They should have called Old Rasputin, old ras-pukin cuz it was gross. I guess I don’t like imperial stouts.

The Oatmeal Stouts have always been my favorites. I just regret not getting Sam Smith’s for comparision purposes because that’s always been my go to Oatmeal Stout…but I thought for sure we’d have multiples of the Sam Smith’s and in the end no one brought them.

No one brought guiness either. I think the new rule should be that one person must volunteer to bring at least one of the more popular beers in a category as we were lacking some benchmark beers in this tasting.

I’m looking forward to the write-up on the brown ales as I missed the last few in the tasting.

Hi Dave! No, I have not had anything from Ska Brewing, but you’ve got me intrigued! I see it may be hard for me to get it here in Massachusetts, but now that it’s on my radar I’ll keep an eye out for it when I travel… thanks for the recommendation! (I’ll have to visit the brewery next time I’m in Colorado!)

Alison – Ever tried Ska’s Special ESB? Or our Modus Hoperandi IPA? I am biased of course, but I share your hop-heartedness and happen to think these are two standout examples of the styles. Nice work on the blog. Cheers, Dave W. – Ska Brewing Co.

Hops!!!!!! I’ve never met a hoppy beer I don’t like. Need to work on trying some more ESBs though as I don’t have any that stick in my mind as favorites. You know I love a Dogfish Head 60min IPA though.

I will welcome your ESB suggestion(s) next time we are out.

Yeah, I didn’t realize until I was writing that post that they had actually retired the ESB, very sad. I need to get down south again finally and try this spot I hear so much about!

I prefer ESB’s to IPA’s. I wish Otter Creek would re-brew their ESB. My favorite though was the Hunter Gatherer’s Brewpub’s ESB, served at the pub only, adjacent to U. of South Carolina in Columbia, SC.

yes, me too! I think Bill is planning to grow some this year… Craig and Andrew both have PLENTY of sun (and I’ve been trying to convince them to grow). And did you know that hops used to grow wild in the Berkshires?
